Yokohama is one of Japan’s oldest port towns, having opened to foreign trade 166 years ago in 1858. Hotels are widely located in the Minato Mirai 21 district—redeveloped from the site of a former shipyard—and in the Yamashita and Chinatown areas. Most of the city’s main tourist attractions are concentrated in these neighborhoods.
A highly recommended route for travelers in wheelchairs is the wheelchair-accessible promenade built along the former freight railway line, stretching from the Red Brick Warehouse to Yamashita Park. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Red Brick Warehouse, Osanbashi Pier, Yokohama Port, the Bay Bridge, Yamashita Park, Marine Tower, and some of Yokohama’s most iconic old buildings: the “King” (City Hall), the “Queen” (Customs House), the “Jack” (Opening Memorial Hall), and the historic Hotel New Grand. This scenic walk can be enjoyed in about an hour, and offers easy access to Chinatown as well.
The central area of Yokohama is compact. There are two sections with accessible walking paths built on former freight railway tracks - one from Red Brick Warehouse to Yamashita Park, and another from near Sakuragicho - station to World Porters. These routes offer scenic views of Yokohama Port and historic buildings, making them highly recommended for a leisurely stroll, even by wheelchair.
